They could save millions by that move

Think about when the last time you used a wall clock or even a public clock pole/tower or something. My brain doesn't even register them anymore, I just look at my phone and reset brain to whatever magic hand box says.

To think there used to be a time where you had to physically go outside and look at a clock tower if you wanted accurate ish local time

edit: hourly workers who live by the time card, disregard this post

With data from alt text on social media we can now calculate exactly how many words a picture is worth.

The whole promise is that reversible computation is theoretically free (in quantum information theory) , quantum computer can exploit it by using quantum superposition to brute force 256bit key (and larger) in a single computation cycle.

There's a massive fundamental flaw in the reasoning behind this.

It's the second law of thermodynamics - entropy always increases. While computation is free, reversal of entropy isn't. What we're being promised is a 21st century version of perpetual motion machine.

Additional explanation:

Think about private key as low entropy, and public key as high entropy. Owner of the private key has cheat code in the form of missing information which allows reversing the entropy of public key.

However in order to break the cryptography you have to reverse public key back into private key without having access to it. The regualr way is to search for flaws in the cryptography scheme that allow reasoning about missing information and consecutively - private key recovery.

But if you do a brute force attack you are 100% forced to pay full thermodynamical price of reversing the entropy. And 2^256 is way, way more than you could ever afford. Even Planck scale values multiplied by that number grow into universe size and beyond.

In summary, quantum computing can skip time component of brute forcing a key, but it can't skip the energy costs. So it will never happen.

I was thinking about how I used a cheap VPS in the past to "temporarily" host something for Lemmy for fun.
Well, our instance had major issues, and a data loss, making me loose access to those comments and post. And I didn't get a domain name, because it was "temporary" anyway.

Now, whoever inherits 167.160.186.15 can embed something else into 2 of my comments and 1 post.

Anyway, this is also the case of hosts like catbox.moe. Perhaps it dies one day, and instead of original images, something malicious will be returned.

A thought genuinely produced in the shower.

Just to make it clear: I do not believe this and I am convinced good old human greed is what's really driving the ai and data-center insanity. Also, LLMs are not and will never become AGI.

Having said that: if an artificial super-intelligence were to emerge, building more data-centers could well be one of it's primary goals. Since it wouln't be concerned with consequences for the environment or humanity, it could pursue this at any cost, with only speed and scale in mind. Convincing financial markets and business elites of the necessity of such a buildout would be the ideal way of achieving results. In this scenario, fighting this buildout by any means would be the only sensible response and of utmost importance.

It's a somewhat funny, somewhat depressing thought for me and I literally had it in the shower. Surely I can't be the first to come up with this, but I also can't remember having read it before.

It's like cool has unofficially been accepted by multiple generations to be the template by which all other trendy words are cut from.

I mean with things like sex trafficking, labor trafficking, etc. IMO it should be called slavery, and those affected need to be rescued from slavery.

A pimp enslaves people

The Tate Brothers (allegedly) enslaved people.

IMO, referring to sex/labor trafficking to slavery will show it just how evil it actually is.

Toxic plastic trash Souls with random fires everywhere, dead trees and smogged out skies that occasionally reveal a sun that burns your flesh. Occasionally, a distant plane will fall, burning out of the sky, leading to loot. Toppled skyscrapers are in the distance here and there with some of it going into the mud due to nature's overall death. Litter the place with a few toxic rivers full of garbage, with burning smokestacks in the distance among thousands of miles of shack-houses.

No guns, because by this time everyone will have willingly lent over their 2nd Amendment rights, just lead pipes full of screws and Stop Signs replaced with giant buzzsaws. Throwables would be molotovs and grenades made of leftover fireworks.

The 'lord souls' if you'd like to call them that, would essentially range from gang lords for mid-bosses leading to capitalist overlords by way of metroidvania-style exploration of their dens of pure malice and spite.

Craftable items would be bolstered by finding various Anarchist Cookbooks.

Nature creates round objects all the time (stones in a river, a hedgehog in a ball,...), but the principle of an axle is not found as far as I know.

I have a pair of nice bluetooth headphones that I really liked and then I got a pair of cheaper ones to use whenever my good ones were charging. The nicer pair have these soft flexible ear tips that are comfortable and shape to my ear. The cheaper pair have a more rigid texture with a slightly larger tip.

Sometimes i fall asleep with the cheaper pair in and after a few months, I'm noticing that my nicer ones don't fit as nicely anymore. My ear holes have actually been stretched and gaped by those cheaper headphones to the point where I use the cheaper ones more than my nice ones because the nice ones don't fill out my ruined whores of ear holes anymore.

If anything has ever given me direction/a path in life it's probably randomness and odds of something, so should I start a cult of probability?

For example, what kind of story would Geralt the Witcher tell his kids? "Once upon a time there was some normal everyday shit that went how it always goes"?

Must be the equivalent of realworld kids saying "Daddy tell me the story about the Tesco delivery again! The one where they forgot the 2L bottle of Pepsi Max!"
