Hey everyone.
I've been slowly losing my faith for years, but in the past two weeks its accelerated to an almost complete state of decay. I've started shopping for other religions, as atheism is not an option for me. Honestly, its been an extremely distressing and demotivating experience. That being said, the gospel has been the single greatest source of meaning and comfort in my life. Even after all I've learned, I'm still trying to give it second-chances and am having a hard time walking away.
So I need your help, if you're willing. If/when I officially leave the church, I want to make sure its not something I feel doubt or shame or fear over. I want peace of mind, and the biggest thing stopping me from getting peace is the Book of Mormon. Now, I'm aware of its obvious issues, such as the convenient disappearance of the alleged plates (awfully convenient), the translation errors from the King James bible carrying over into the Book of Mormon (oops), and the litany of unsubstantiated anachronisms (barley? giant cities that "covered the face of the Earth" but are nowhere to be found a mere few centuries later?).
At the same time... there is a lot of stuff in Joseph Smith's corner. Several anachronisms have been supported with evidence, such as horses being used by Americans before Europeans arrived. Additionally, no historical analogue exists for the production of such a large and complicated book by means of dictation from memory in a single working draft. Every book of scripture in existence has been the work of decades of oral tradition being compiled after the death of the supposed prophet. The Bible (especially the Old but also the New Testament), the Qu'ran, the Talmud, the Vedas, even the Doctrine and Covenants... but the Book of Mormon is the only exception I am aware of. Even accounting for plagiarism (of which there are not any plausible source texts identified), it is an extremely impressive feat.
So, I'm at an impasse. I feel the scales are balanced evenly, and I'm looking for ways to tip the scales, so I can make peace with my decisions. I am obviously doing my own research... but frankly, its incredibly heavy, and therefore difficult to make progress. I get depressed just thinking about it.. If any of you notice things I've missed that helped you "wrest the scriptures" (as the ole book itself says), please share.
Ugh, the amount of apprehension I feel just typing this is so frustrating. Side tangent: I hate how we were raised that if you ever left the church you fell prey to the devil. Like Russel M. Nelson's quips about "without the Holy Ghost, you will be deceived!" So annoying, because now there's a little voice in my head saying "you're being deceived! the devil is taking you!" God, I hate this.
