I genuinely love BeamNG. The soft-body physics is unmatched and no other game comes close. But there are some things that have been bothering me for a while and I want to get it out there. Maybe the devs will see this.
1. Fix the AA (FXAA/SMAA)
This is honestly my biggest complaint with the game right now. The current FXAA and SMAA solutions are blurry and just look dated. This is the number one thing that kills immersion for me personally. A proper modern AA solution would make such a huge difference and it feels like something that should have been addressed years ago.
2. Native UI please
The UI is being migrated from AngularJS to Vue.js which is progress, but it is still browser-based and still has the same sluggish feeling. Getting a noticeable delay when opening a menu on a high end PC is just not acceptable. I hope they eventually go all the way and rebuild it natively instead of just swapping one browser framework for another.
3. Proper graphics overhaul
BeamNG runs on DX11 and the Vulkan work is apparently already in progress which is great news. Here is what I think still needs to happen:
- Full Vulkan support to reduce CPU overhead and allow proper multi-threaded rendering
- DLSS and FSR support, which would be a massive help for lower end PCs
- Better LODs because the current pop-in is really noticeable and breaks immersion
- Better and more optimized reflections
Yeah this would take years for a team their size but it would completely transform the game.
4. Proper tire degradation
This one feels like a no brainer for a simulator this detailed. Right now tires don't really degrade in a meaningful way during normal use. What I want to see:
- Burning out or doing donuts actually wears down the tire over time, reducing grip
- Rubber gets deposited on the asphalt, creating a racing line that gives slightly more grip if you drive on it
- Long highway runs at high speed cause gradual heat buildup and wear
- Visually you can actually see the tire getting worn down
BeamNG already simulates tire pressure, temperature and deformation to some degree. Proper degradation feels like the natural next step and fits perfectly with the realism first philosophy the devs already have. A game that simulates bypass shock fluid dynamics should absolutely have tires that wear out.
I would love to see all of this happen, even if it takes a long time. BeamNG is already something special and these changes would make it untouchable.
